How Working Out is Like Watching Seinfeld

Do you remember how funny this was the first time you saw it?

A classic!

Is it as funny now, though, as it was the first time you saw it?

Probably not.

Usually, the first time we see these something is the best time. Once we’ve seen it, we know what to expect.

“I’m unemployed and I live with my parents,” isn’t surprising or hilarious anymore. It’s funny, but nowhere near as funny as the first time you saw it.

We know this, though.

We realize that the more we try to recreate that first magical moment, theĀ less benefit we get from it.

Working out is the exact same.

Jogging on streetWe all have workouts or routines we love.

Maybe a certain arm workout had you feeling like Hercules. Perhaps jogging five kilometers, four days per week is how you lost twenty pounds.

Whatever the reason, that particular routine had you feeling like a million bucks. So you try it again.

And again, and again, and again.

For some reason, though, it just isn’t the same. You don’t feel like Hercules. You’ve stopped losing weight.

The reason for this is simple.

Your body isn’t “surprised” by your efforts anymore, so you stop getting great results.

Eating and exercising a certain way is how you get from Point A to Point B. But it’s not how you get from Point B to Point C.

This is why it’s important to continuously challenge and push yourself in new ways.

Lift more weight. Run further. Jump higher. Go faster. Try something new.

Your body is smarter than you give it credit for.

In the same way you can’t expect Seinfeld reruns to once again bring you to tears, you can’t just “jog for forty minutes” and expect to see continuous improvement.
