Are You A Giver Or A Taker? – Conviction Fitness

Are You A Giver Or A Taker?

My first part-time job taught me that there are two kinds of people in this world.

There are givers and there are takers.

While flipping burgers behind the counter I came to the conclusion that some of my colleagues were there simply to take home a paycheck. These people seemed to believe that it was their right to have a job. They felt they where overworked, underpaid, and that their job was below them.

In their eyes, they received their paycheck every two weeks whether they worked hard or hardly worked, so why bother trying?

Useful or Useless
Which are you?

There were other people, however, that were the opposite.

These people seemed to come to work to give it their all. They didn’t care that they worked for minimum wage at a fast food restaurant. They wanted their efforts to be a reflection of who they were and what they stood for.

These people worked hard because if they didn’t, they wouldn’t be able to look themselves in the mirror when they got home.

Fifteen years and several jobs and life experiences later, I believe this now more than ever.

I see people that go to work to take home a paycheck. They spend most of their work day chatting on Facebook and shopping online. After “work” they pick-up some take-out and enjoy a quiet night taking in the latest Netflix series. Five episodes at a time.

If something bad happens and disrupts their daily routine, they lose their mind. They’re the ones mad because the three car collision is slowing them down, not the ones thinking, “I hope everyone is ok”.

These people believe society owes them something, just because they show up.

Thankfully, I also see the opposite.

I see people that always go the extra mile. At work, they give it their all. They put others before themselves. They volunteer to help and are always willing to lend a helping hand. They aren’t looking for recognition or awards, they do these things because they can’t not do them. Giving their all, is all they know.

I’m starting to see the same thing in health and fitness.

I see people that want to take from their body, and people that want to give to it.

There are people that expect their body to perform for them without ever giving it what it needs. They expect to be able to shovel their driveway, walk up stairs, or bend over without breaking yet they eat like trash, never exercise, and barely sleep. They expect their body to give, give, give while they continue to take, take, take.

These people believe their body owes them something, just because they have one.

runThen there are people that invest in their health and well-being. These people spend a bit more on groceries to give their body the nutrients it needs. They exercise regularly to give their body the physical activity it desires. And they sleep 7-9 hours every night, giving their body the rest it deserves.

To them, giving their body what it needs is more important than taking in fast food and cheap entertainment.

What really confuses me, though, is people that give in every aspect of their life except their health.

People that give it their all at work. People that put others before themselves. People that volunteer to lend a helping hand, yet refuse to treat their body with the same respect they give everyone else.

It breaks my heart to be honest.

These givers are the most valuable members of our society.

People that give more than they take are irreplaceable.

We need these people to set a good example. We need them to show the world that a human life is capable of so much more than eating junk and watching television. We need them to show people that it’s ok to do more than your share and not expect anything in return.

We need more givers in the world.

And we need them to be healthy enough to stick around for a while.
